Our partner drills boreholes, carries out field tests and examines samples in the laboratory. All the results then come together in the geotechnical site investigation report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quality of the investigation sets the quality of every foundation and shoring decision. For example, a wrong soil parameter can make a pile longer than needed, or too short. That is why we do not see the investigation as just a document for the building permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When do you need a site investigation?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list fz-checks\">\n<li>At the permit and design stage of a new building<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before deciding on piled foundations, shoring or ground improvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When a new building replaces an old one in urban regeneration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When an existing building shows settlement and cracks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When extra floors or a change of use will increase the load<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"process\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does a site investigation work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We run the investigation in five steps. Our partner carries out the drilling and laboratory work, while we plan the programme and the use of the results together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list fz-svc-steps\">\n<li><strong>Desk review:<\/strong> We look at the plot, the number of basement levels and the neighbouring buildings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Borehole plan:<\/strong> We set the number and depth of boreholes from the size of the building and the likely foundation system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fieldwork:<\/strong> Our partner runs SPTs in the boreholes, takes samples and cores where needed, and measures groundwater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Laboratory:<\/strong> The samples go through classification, strength and settlement tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Report:<\/strong> The report covers the layers, the parameters and the foundation recommendations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group fz-svc-note is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The most common problem we see:<\/strong> boreholes that stop short of the planned excavation and pile depth. Nobody can make a sound foundation decision without seeing the layer the piles will sit in. So we recommend choosing borehole depth to suit the likely foundation system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"tests\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Site investigation tests: field and laboratory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, we choose the tests to suit the ground and the project. The same data also show the liquefaction risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"report\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should a site investigation report contain?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good report contains not only test results but also the engineering recommendations that follow from them. So when you read a report, we suggest checking these headings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list fz-checks\">\n<li>Borehole logs: layers, SPT values and sample depths<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Groundwater level and the date of measurement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laboratory results and design parameters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ground class under TBDY 2018 and a liquefaction assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recommended foundation system: raft, piles or ground improvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recommendations for excavation and shoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the contractor, we also read the report alongside the pile and shoring decisions. For example, if the rock level is unclear in the report, we say from the start that the pile length will be unclear too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"price\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the price of a site investigation depend on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, drilled metres and the number of tests set the price. Even on a small plot, for example, more than one borehole shows whether the layers change.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details fz-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>How deep should the boreholes go?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Above all, each borehole should go deep enough to reach the layer that will carry the foundation load. So if piled foundations are likely, the boreholes need to go below the pile toes.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details fz-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Can the results change the foundation system?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, often. For example, rock deeper than expected makes piles longer, and high groundwater creates the need for a cut-off.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading fz-faq-group\">Designers and supervising engineers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group fz-faq-list fz-faq-list--svc is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<details class=\"wp-block-details fz-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>What does the SPT value show?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SPT value is the number of blows needed for 30 cm of penetration. It gives a rough idea of density in sand and consistency in clay. In design, however, you need corrected values.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details fz-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>When do you need a geophysical survey?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seismic design needs the shear wave velocity to set the ground class. Therefore, a geophysical survey or correlations in the code must provide this value.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details fz-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>How do you assess liquefaction?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In loose, saturated sand and silt, for example, you calculate the safety against liquefaction from SPT or CPT data.
